Summary

The Department of Education (Victoria) was established in October 1992, by amendment of Schedule 2 of the Public Sector Management Act 1992 (Victorian Government Gazette S 53). The Department replaced a number of separate, independent bodies, which were established in the period from October 1991 to 1992. The administrative units established during this period were as follows: Department of School Education, Office of Higher Education, Division of Further Education, Education and Training Strategic Policy Secretariat, and the Office of the State Training Board. The functions of the Department were as follows: administration of tertiary education (1992-1999), regulation of school attendance (1992-1999), administration of technical education and apprenticeships (1992-1999), administration of school education (1992-1999) . The Department was abolished in October 1999 and the Department of Education, Employment and Training was established under Administrative Arrangements Order No. 159 (Victorian Government Gazette S 158).
