Summary

The Department of Education and the Arts (Tasmania) was established on 17 July 1989 under Statutory Rules 1989 No. 114, as a merger between the State Library of Tasmania and the Education Department (1886-1989). On 1 July 1990 the Trustees of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery came under the direction of the new department. The Department was responsible for carrying out the following functions: "development and provision of school and community education, vocational education and industry training programs and regulation of educational institutions. Includes research, curriculum development, examinations, scholarships and qualification recognition." The Department was abolished on 27 March 1996, and renamed the Department of Education, Community and Cultural Development.
