Summary

The Commonwealth Tertiary Education Commission was established on 22 June 1977, under the Commonwealth Tertiary Education Act 1977, taking over functions from the Universities Commission (1959-1977), the Commission on Advanced Education (1972-1977) and the Technical and Further Education Commission (1975-1977). The Commission was responsible for carrying out the following functions: provide advice to the Minister regarding the granting of Commonwealth financial assistance to universities and other continuing education institutions. The Commission was abolished on 1 July 1988 with the repeal of the Commonwealth Tertiary Education Commission Act 1977 by the Employment, Education and Training Act 1988.
