Summary

The Australian Education Council (AEC) was established in 1936 as a voluntary body without statutory authority. The Council was responsible for carrying out the following functions: " …arrange the mutual exchange of information regarding education in Australia and abroad; …co-operate for the purchase of ensuring the maintenance of high standards of education;…promote, where desirable, the adoption of consistent policies on educational problems;…consider those educational provisions necessary for the development of the individual; and to consider those educational provisions necessary to ensure to continuity of an adequate supply of qualified manpower for industry, commerce and the professions." The Council was abolished on 8 February 1994 and its functions were transferred to the Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs.
