Summary
The Education Department (Tasmania) was established on 1 January 1886, under The Education Act, 1885 (49 Vict. No.15). The primary functions of the Department were "the management and control of the state system of primary and secondary education." The Department was abolished on 17 July 1989 and was replaced by the Department of Education and the Arts.
