Summary

The Board of Secondary Education (New South Wales) was established on 17/08/1987 under the Education and Public Instruction Act, 1987, replacing the Secondary Schools Board (1961-1987). The Board was responsible for carrying out the following functions: "determine courses of study in secondary schools and to grant school certificates and higher school certificates; make arrangements for the conduct of examinations and other methods of assessment; evaluate qualifications obtained outside NSW; provide advice to students, employers and the public regarding the content of secondary school courses; advise and make recommendations to the Minister regarding secondary school examinations…[and] monitor the application of its policies in schools." The Board was abolished on 8 June 1990 under Education Reform Act 1990, and was replaced by the Board of Studies (New South Wales).
