Summary

The Department of Education and Children's Services (South Australia) was established in 1994 under the Education Act 1972, replacing the Education Department (1878-1994). The Department was responsible for carrying out the following functions: "provi[sion] [of] preschool services, general primary and secondary education, alternative schools and centres for students with special needs, specialist schools and a range of support services. [The Department also] administer[ed] family day care and outside school hours care on behalf of the Commonwealth and licences and regulates the child care sector in South Australia." The Department was abolished in 1997, and the Department of Education, Training and Employment was established.
